Ooni's Got Me! - Paleo Plus Pizza

Updated: Jan 28

Wild Shrimp Pizza has become my favorite...

I'm excited to announce that I have joined Ooni's Affiliate Team. Ooni is the world's NUMBER ONE pizza oven brand. Known for bringing portable pizza ovens to backyards all over the world, Ooni's goal is to help people make truly great pizza at home.

If you've followed me for any amount of time, you know that I am a pizza guy. I started tossing pies in 1996 at a small Italian Restaurant in Dilworth, Minnesota and I've been obsessed ever since! My wife and I have been making her Cracker Crust pizzas since 2003 and we recently "leveled up" our pizza journey when we started using our Ooni Koda 16 Pizza Oven.

Here is our setup with Wally on clean-up:

We thought we had the best pizza program for the longest time, but we were wrong!!!

Here are five things I like about our Ooni:

  1. It cooks pizza super fast. With our old program, it would take us 5-10 minutes to par-bake the crust and then another 10-20 once we topped it. With the Ooni, the pizzas literally cook in 60 seconds.

  2. It is outside. Anything that gets me outside is a plus. Fresh air, ease of cleanup and less time in the kitchen all play into this one. In the summer, this is especially true because we are not heating up the kitchen. Cleanup is a cinch when you are out of doors!

  3. It preheats in a jiffy. I know Ooni says that it takes 20 minutes to preheat, but we've found it to be a lot faster. With our conventional oven, it takes 20-30 minutes to preheat to 450°, the Ooni gets up to 900° in far less time.

  4. Next to none flavor. You've all had brick oven pizza and loved it, right? It has an extra flavor profile without any calories or ingredients. The taste is unique and one that we've fallen in love with.

  5. Amazing dough recipes. Both the traditional and the gluten free dough recipes that Ooni has formulated are incredible. We use active dry yeast, we've made single and double batches, and we are blown away with the simplicity. I know it's cliché, but it seriously couldn't be any easier.

I could keep this list going, but I am a fan of five.

This all sounds nice, but is pizza Paleo?

Great question! The pizzas we make are NOT PALEO. We can go gluten-free, we can do cauliflower crust, but at the end of the day, unless it is a MEATZA, it's virtually impossible to make a Paleo pizza. I encourage you to do what works for you when it comes to diet. For us, we enjoy pizza once a week, especially when it comes out of our Ooni! I will be sharing my pizza experience on Instagram and here on this blog. I'll do a lot of dairy-free and gluten-free variations, but I do like cheese once in awhile. As always, I believe a diet should make room for indulgence, whether it's cheesecake, a cheeseburger, or cheese pizza...

I highly recommend this product. I only promote quality and Ooni fits the bill. I use this oven on a weekly basis and I couldn't be happier. They have several models to choose from as well as tables, and many other accessories. At a minimum, you need to get one of their pizza turning peels (pictured above). This is crucial for turning the pizza and making sure it doesn't burn. I can't think of another tool that could replace it, so if you pull the trigger on an Ooni, be sure to get a turning peel as well.

Okay! I'll leave you with a picture of my favorite pizza. I hope that you'll follow along on my pizza journey. It is one of my passions and I believe that everyone needs pizza in their lives on a regular basis. If you feel the same, then I highly recommend an Ooni Pizza Oven.

Your Pal,

Paleo Nick

Frutti Di Mare Pie with Serranos of course!
